The RC Car and Radio Control Racing Web Site
Comments: Hi Pro, Love your site! I've already learned more than I thought I needed in this first visit. (I've got a wheel in boiling water as I type. Does this work for CA'd tires?) But, what got me on the search tonight was wheels. I've searched high and low to find some cool wheels for my recently purchased (used) Inferno DX. I see an abundance of 1/10 scale goodies, but not much for the 1/8 scale gas buggies. :-( Where can I find wheels for my Inferno? Best I've seen so far is Tower Hobbies. They have the original Kyosho wheels for $10.99 a pair in a couple neon colors. This is pretty good, but where are the chrome's and custom designs? Are the Inferno's wheels a special breed? Or do most 1/8 scale wheels have the same size and drive "hub"? Also, tires seem to be kind of rare for the Inferno's 80mm rims. So far, I've got bearings throughout, MIP CVD's up front, and a tuned pipe on the Duratrax engine. Response: As far as I know the only rims available for the Inferno series of cars is the stock Kyosho ones that you mentioned. There was a rim available from Duratrax (owned by Great Planes) a few years back but they kept on breaking so they were discontinued. The stock Kyosho rim works very well. They come in about 5 different colours (orange, yellow, blue, green, white), they are very light (more power), and they don't break easily. Stick with the stock stuff! As for chrome stuff, you're not going to find it (unless some small manufacturer is making them). The reason is that the Kyosho Inferno is a top of the line racing machine and although chrome rims look cool, they are not for racing. The chrome chips off and looks bad, there is unnecessary added weight, and when the tires are glued to chrome rims, the glue bonds to the chrome and not the rim so if the chrome chips off the tire could fall off or become loose (this is the biggest drawback to chrome). As for the drive size for the rims, Kyosho is unique. Mugen, Thunder Tiger, and OFNA all use a different hex size as compared to Kyosho so again, you are going to have to stick with the stock stuff. Tires are a different story. Most 1/8 scale tires will fit any 1/8 scale rim. Although the hex drive may be a different size, the outer diameter of the rim is the same. Check out tires from Kyosho, Pro-Line, Mugen, OFNA, Thunder Tiger, Duratrax, and others (I can't list them all). I have found that the Kyosho and Pro-Line tires have been the most versatile as they seem to work under many different track conditions (obviously there are different treads so you will have to experiment a bit). The Kyosho tires last the longest but they are by far the most expensive, I guess you get what you pay for. Good luck with your tire and rim choice. You've got a good machine (I'm a Kyosho guy myself with 1/8 scale). I am looking forward to your next e-mail when you tell me that you started racing and are kicking butt. Let's take off a few tenths per lap, "PRO" Comments 2: I received this message a few days after answering this question: Just wanted to add - to your "Inferno Rims" question, that I think Nuova Faor makes rims for the Inferno Series and adapters to fit other brands of rims to the car.
