MIP Probe for Tires?

Comments:  Do you thing you could use an MIP temp gauge to measure tire temp on each tire after several laps around a race track?  Then you could determine which tire is getting worked the hardest and adjust the car for max traction.

Response:   The answer is no, you couldn't use an MIP temp probe to measure the temperature of each tire. MIP probes are touch probes, that means that they obtain mip-probe.jpg (5947 bytes)the temperature of the object by actually touching the surface and quantifying it through the measuring device. If you touch a "touch probe" to a surface to obtain a temp, the MIP probe itself will dissipate some of the heat and an inaccurate reading is displayed. For a "touch probe" to work properly it must be attached always to the service you require a temperature for (this is how it is used on engines). It would be very difficult to have an MIP probe attached to each wheel all the time :-)

The only way you could use your system of car setup is with an infrared temp probe (very expensive) in which the temperature is obtained through infrared signals and not through a physical touch. Even that would not work too well as since the temperature of the tires will be so close, by the time you get from the first tire temp to the last, the last tire will have already cooled down.

You have an interesting idea and it is good that you are always trying to think of ways to go faster but this particular idea needs a lot of work.

I hope this helps,

Let's take off a few tenths per lap,
